More than 450 sound off on uranium study
January 07, 2009 9:37 AM

More than 450 people attended a public hearing for a state commission studying the safety of uranium mining in Virginia, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Most of the people attending the hearing opposed any uranium mining.

A group of landowners has created Virginia Uranium Inc. to explore mining an estimated $10 billion worth of uranium in Pittsylvania County. The ore can be used to fuel nuclear energy. Currently, uranium mining is prohibited in Virginia.

Opponents are concerned uranium mining would hurt the local environment.

The state commission expects to take up to two years to study uranium mining. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
