A trauma center site review team from the Virginia Department of Health has recommended that Mary Washington Hospital be verified as a level II trauma center.
Verification allows the hospital to continue providing trauma services as a member of the Commonwealth of Virginia Trauma System.
The hospital was initially designated as a level II trauma center in 2008.
Hospital officials said that, in the past three years, the trauma program has added more surgeons and acquired additional emergency department space.
Mary Washington Hospital is one of four level II trauma centers in Virginia and the only one in the Fredericksburg area.
In examining the Mary Washington program, the site review team examined patient care, program stability, administrative support, continuing education and performance improvement among other things.
