Lingerfelt Development, based in Richmond, says demolition is underway on the BioTech 3 building in the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park in downtown Richmond. The building is coming down to make way for construction of a new BioTech 8 building that will serve as the headquarters for fast-growing Health Diagnostic Laboratory (HDL) Inc.
Once it’s complete, the three-building headquarters complex will total 300,000 square feet and be valued at $100 million. The project is an expansion for HDL, a clinical laboratory that is adding hundreds of jobs.
During the first phases of construction, Lingerfelt said the project will include a six-story,112,000-square-foot wet lab biotech building with a two-story parking deck expansion. The parking facilities will be connected by a two-story lab that bridges HDL’s existing building and the new Phase I building, scheduled for completion in December.
In the second phase of development in 2013, an additional six-story,112,000-square-foot tower will be built. At total build out, the two towers and HDL’s existing building will total more than 300,000 square feet, and the facility will have a 485-space parking deck.
