Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced Wednesday that he will create a sub-cabinet to promote development of sustainable growth communities to reduce suburban sprawl and protect Virginia’s natural resources.
The Sub-Cabinet on Community Investment will distribute state discretionary funds to encourage developers to incorporate existing infrastructure, use compact development, protect Virginia’s natural resources, use alternative transportation choices and offer diverse housing opportunities.
“Virginia loses 165 acres every day to development, and while we welcome this growth and economic success, it is paramount that we grow in a wise and sustainable way with an eye towards conservation,” Kaine said.
Secretary of Natural Resources L. Preston Bryant will chair the group, which will include Secretary of Administration Viola O. Baskerville, Secretary of Commerce and Trade Patrick O. Gottscharlk, Secretary of Finance Jody M. Wagner and Secretary of Transportation Pierce R. Homer.
