Former Gov. Tim Kaine announced Tuesday he is running for the Senate seat left open by retiring Democratic Sen. Jim Webb.

Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, e-mailed a YouTube video to supporters to announce his decision.

“I’m running for the United States Senate because America has big challenges, and I believe Virginia has answers to help strengthen our nation,” Kaine says on the video shot on the back steps of his Richmond home.

Virginia’s race for a Senate seat will be closely watched as Democrats have a small, 53-47, majority in the U.S. Senate.

Kaine’s announcement could set up a battle with another former governor. Republican George Allen, whom Webb defeated by a slim margin in 2006, is seeking the Republican
nomination. Tea Party activist Jamie Radtke and Virginia Beach attorney David McCormick are also running for the seat.

Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, and Del. Bob Marshall have also expressed some interest in seeking the Republican nomination.
