Index shows little gain despite advances by 33 stocks
April 27, 2009 12:00 AMThirty-three of the 50 stocks in the Virginia Business Stock Index advanced during March, but the index rose only 9.31 points, or 2.58 percent.
By contrast, major indexes such as the Dow Jones industrial average, the S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq Composite Index increased by higher percentages as the stock market began to rebound from a bottom reached in early March.
During the month, Genworth Financial Inc. had the highest percentage gain, 57.02 percent, while NVR Inc. had the biggest dollar gain, $94.98.
Over the previous 12 months, leading gainers included NCI Inc., up 36.91 percent, and Advance Auto Parts Inc., 20.65 percent.
