People — Christopher A. Sowick, senior vice president for Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers, is serving as the 2009 president of the 600-member Greater Washington Commercial Association of Realtors. Sowick has been recognized by GWCAR in the past as one of Northern Virginia’s top leasing brokers.

New office — Thalhimer/Cushman & Wakefield Alliance has opened a new office in Roanoke, its fifth in Virginia. The Richmond-based firm has formed a joint venture with Copty & Co., headed by Bob Copty, in Roanoke, It will conduct business under the Thalhimer name. Copty’s sales/leasing portfolio includes 650,000 square feet and a management portfolio of more than 375,000 square feet.

Construction — R. W. Murray Co., a private general contractor in Manassas, is building the $13 million Pender Village Center in Fairfax for developer Atlantic Realty Cos. The 86,000-square-foot office and retail project will be part of a larger center anchored by grocer Harris Teeter. The project, at Route 50 and Fair Ridge Drive, is expected to be finished by the fourth quarter.

The Hampton Roads division of Advantis Construction Co. delivered $22.5 million in construction projects in 2008. One of the largest in Virginia was Creekside Villages, a 21,875-square-foot strip shopping center in Suffolk. Advantis Construction is an affiliate of GVA Advantis, a Washington, D.C.-based commercial real estate firm. 

Leases — The Richmond office of Liberty Property Trust signed a new long-term lease with T-Mobile USA Inc. for all the space at Westgate I, a 91,752-square-foot office building in Henrico County. Jones Lang LaSalle represented T-Mobile in the transaction.

Retail — Gold’s Gym Richmond is expanding. Last month, it relocated from 885 Research Road into a $1.2 million, renovated 40,000-square-foot building in the Shops at Arboretum. In March, Gold’s plans to open a new $8 million fitness center at Westchester Commons. That’s the retail section of the mixed-use Watkins Centre going up in Chesterfield County at the intersection of Route 288 and Midlothian Turnpike.
