Falls Church-based HITT Contracting Inc. has started work on the $28 million Arlington Mill Community Center. The project includes a five-story, 55,000-square-foot building and a 110,000-square-foot, two-story, underground garage. Upon completion, it will include a fitness center, gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, a community learning center, retail space, outdoor public plaza and playground.

The company plans to incorporate enough sustainable building techniques to apply for a silver certification under LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). There will be a rain harvesting cistern, regional landscaping, a green roof and low-flow plumbing fixtures.  HITT Contracting plans to complete the community center, gymnasium, and plaza during summer 2013.  The schedule includes early delivery of the north side of the garage, which will would assist in the development of a proposed 122-unit,  multifamily project for the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing.

“This is the second LEED® community center HITT Contracting will have built for Arlington County in recent years,”  Kim Roy, the company’s vice president said in a statement. “This project exemplifies HITT’s ongoing commitment to Arlington County, where its roots date back over seven decades.”

The project is part of the county’s focus on revitalizing the Columbia Pike corridor.  Founded in 1937 as a small family business in Arlington, HITT has grown into one of the top 100 largest general contractors in the U.S. with offices in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Charleston and South Florida.
