Health systems form partnership for cardiac surgery services

Mary Washington Healthcare and University of Virginia Health System have formed a partnership to improve cardiac surgery services in the Fredericksburg area.
As a result of the partnership, Dr. Richard Gitter.has been named chief cardiovascular surgeon and medical director of the cardiovascular surgery program at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg . He formerly was director of cardiovascular surgery at the Mercy Heart Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Gitter‘s surgical specialties include surgical treatment of coronary artery disease, complex cardiac valvular disease, aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease and all other aspects of peripheral arterial disease. He also will be responsible for growing the cardiac surgery program and for recruiting another cardiovascular surgeon to the region.
In addition to his work at Mary Washington Healthcare, Gitter is associate professor of Surgery at the University of Virginia Health System.
This is the second partnership between Mary Washington Healthcare and the University of Virginia Health System. Earlier this year, they announced a plan to bring stereotactic radiosurgery to the Fredericksburg area through the MWHC Regional Cancer Center.
