A Lynchburg subsidiary of the Harris Corp. will perform much of the work on a $289 million government contract that Harris landed with the government of Alberta, Canada.
The award is for a public safety radio communications system. It will serve an area of 256,000 square miles and serve as a critical communications link among Alberta’s first responders, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The headquarters for Harris Public Safety and Professional Communications is located in Lynchburg. According to a spokesman for Harris, engineers there will design the system and its components and perform the final staging and configuration for the system in Alberta. The company employs nearly 600 people at the Lynchburg facility. Based in Melbourne, Fla., Harris is a leading supplier of communication systems and equipment for public safety, and it supports more than 500 systems around the world.
