Canadian-based Gildan Activewear announced Thursday it would close its knitting plant in Hillsville, laying off 180 employees.
The Carroll County plant will close at the end of February. It also announced it would close an Alabama plant.
Gildan said the closure of its plants were due to a decrease in retail sales, global competition in socks and the bad economy.
The company is applying for U.S. Trade Adjustment Assistance Act benefits for the employees at the plant.
