Genworth recognized for employee health programs
Genworth Financial Inc. has received a Virginia Healthcare Innovators Award for its programs promoting employee health.
Begun in 2008, the myhealthIQ Health Risk Assessment program includes screenings for health risks such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Since 2008, the percentage of employees participating in the program with low health risks has increased from 62 to 70 percent, and the company has been able to keep its medical costs flat in three of the past four years.
During the same time, health costs have risen 7 percent annually Genworth employees participating in the program get a 20 percent discount on their health insurance premiums. If they show improvement in lowering their health risks, they receive an additional discount.
The company has fitness centers at its Richmond and Lynchburg locations available free of chart to employees, spouses and retirees. Genworth offers employees at other location partial reimbursement for gym memberships.
During the first quarter of this year, the company also opened on-site clinics staffed by nurse practitioners in Richmond and Lynchburg . The clinics are open to all employees, spouses and children over the age of 12 covered under the company’s medical plan. The nurse practitioners can provide shots and treatment of some acute-care ailments such as migraines.
In May 2010, the company launched the 100- Mile Challenge to prepare for the Virginia 10 Miler races. More than 1,300 employees participated, logging 150,000 miles in four months.
The company’s definition of wellness includes financial wellness with free one-on-one consultations on financial literacy plus lunch-and- learn sessions.
The purpose of the Virginia Healthcare Innovators Awards is to recognize organizations that have developed innovative ways to improve healthcare quality and efficiency.
