A new waterfront destination came to life on the banks of the Potomac River in April with the opening of the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. The $865 million property is the largest combined hotel/convention center on the East Coast. It’s also the focal point of National Harbor, a massive 300-acre, mixed-use project in Prince George’s County, Md., 15 minutes from the nation’s capital. Behind what is taking shape as a small waterfront city — with condominiums, shops and restaurants — is developer Milton Peterson of Fairfax. He heads The Peterson Cos., a longtime player in Northern Virginia real estate.

Gaylord National offers 2,000 guest rooms priced at $299 a night and 110 suites staring at $1,100. Guests have their pick of seven restaurants and a rooftop lounge. There’s also an in-house salon, a spa and fitness center offering panoramic views of the river.

Convention-goers can spread out with 470,000 square feet of meeting, convention and exhibit space, including the 50,000-square-foot Potomac Ballroom.
