Gander Mountain announced Thursday it will leave the Richmond market, and locally owned Green Top Sporting Goods will move into the 67,000-square-foot store along Interstate 95 in Hanover County.
“It provides us with additional space that we need,” said Bill Prout, president and CFO of Green Top Sporting Goods. “We have outgrown our current facility.”
The move will give Green Top Sporting Goods more than five times the space it has now. The outdoor specialty store currently operates from a 12,000-square-foot store along U.S. Route 1 near the
Hanover-Henrico County border.
“Green Top ha a 65-year history in this trade area,” said Myke Lynch, operations manager for Green Top. “The proximity to our competition is important to us, and it offered us an opportunity to move into a place with visibility from 95.”
Competition for outdoor specialty retailers has been stiff since Gander Mountain moved into the Hanover location in 2007, and Bass Pro Shops opened a store a year later in the county.
Gander Mountain plans to stay open in Hanover through July and will offer discounts on its goods.
Gander Mountain, which has 114 stores in 23 states, is currently in the midst of a seven-store expansion, including new locations in Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina.
“Green Top Sporting Goods was looking to expand and offered Gander Mountain a unique opportunity to redeploy assets to its previously announced expansion plans in a cost-effective manner,” Eric Jacobsen, executive vice president for Gander Mountain, said in statement.
