Freddie Mac names COO

McLean-based Freddie Mac has appointed a former Morgan Stanley executive as its new chief operating officer.
Bruce M. Witherell, 49, will start work on Sept. 14. Witherell was managing director and global co-head of the residential mortgage business at Morgan Stanley. There, he managed global trading and mortgage operations in the U.S., England, Italy, Japan, Russia.
Before Morgan Stanley, Witherell worked for 15 years at Lehman Brothers Holdings.
The COO position has been open since 2007.
The government seized control of the mortgage finance company in September after it became clear the company was at risk of collapsing.
