Albany Industries Inc., a New Albany, Miss., manufacturer of upholstered furniture, will invest $2.5 million to open its first Virginia operation in Galax. The project will create 335 jobs. (News release)

Backcountry.com, an online retailer of outdoor clothing and gear, will open a $20 million East Coast distribution facility in Montgomery County, creating 200 jobs. Backcountry sells online, or by phone, and has no physical store locations. Orders had been processed solely through a warehouse in Salt Lake City. (The Roanoke Times)

Federal-Mogul Corp., a global automotive supplier, will invest $10 million to expand its engine bearing manufacturing plant in Montgomery County. The project will add new manufacturing lines and equipment, creating 50 jobs. (News release)

GS Industries, of Bassett, will expand its plastic molding operation to include children’s toy parts, adding 35 jobs. The toy parts will be created for Kids II, which produces the Bright Starts brand products. (The Roanoke Times)

The Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke has been awarded a three-year federal grant for $240,750 for its work to address violence against women. The grant will focus on improving the safety of its students and on the larger effort of educating health care workers about responding to violence. (The Roanoke Times)

Neurotek, the first spinoff company from the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, will open in a Roanoke redevelopment zone intended to become a biomedical park. Neurotek’s work is based on the use of ultrasound to treat neurological diseases, including depression and epilepsy. (The Roanoke Times)

The Virginia Supreme Court has ruled that most of the cost of building of a Norfolk Southern Corp. intermodal rail yard in Montgomery County can be paid by the state. The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors had challenged plans to build the massive freight-handling yard in the Elliston area. (The Roanoke Times)

Woods Rogers PLC formed Skyline Capital Strategies, a business advisory firm, to provide consultation services in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions. Skyline will be led by Greg Feldmann, former president and CEO of StellarOne Bank in Christiansburg. (The Roanoke Times)
