OptiNet, the all-fiber-optic network of the Bristol Virginia Utilities, was named the Community Broadband Fiber Network of the Year by the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors. BVU was the first municipal fiber-to-premises broadband network in the country. Today it runs 850 miles through eight counties. (News release)

Center in the Square, a downtown Roanoke nonprofit that offers free space for museums and arts organizations, announced plans for a $27 million renovation to be finished in 2012. Some of the plans include rooftop gardens, a butterfly habitat, a coral reef aquarium and high-tech interactive games. (The Roanoke Times)

HomeTown Bank, a Roanoke-based financial institution, chose Richmond-based Neathawk Dubuque & Packett as its marketing and advertising agency of record. HomeTown seeks to strengthen and expand its market position in the Roanoke region, as well as in the New River Valley. (News release)

Lewis-Gale Medical Center recently marked its 100th anniversary. The facility originally began in downtown Roanoke, but the current hospital is located in Salem. It is now a part of the hospital company HCA Inc. (The Roanoke Times)

Roanoke hired the Florida-based executive search firm Colin Baenziger & Associates to search for a new city manager to replace Darlene Burcham, who is retiring by March 2010. The firm will be paid a flat fee of $21,750 for the search. An offer to a candidate is expected to be made by December. (The Roanoke Times)

Virginia Tech received $850,000 from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for faculty development and fellowships after reviving its nuclear engineering program in 2007. The funds are part of an effort to further nuclear education at 70 institutions around the country. (News release)

A joint venture between Wellmont Health System and HealthSouth Corp. will open and operate a 25-bed hospital in Bristol to offer rehabilitative services. The facility will be called The Rehabilitation Hospital of Southwest Virginia. (PRNewswire)
