Carilion Clinic has filed an application requesting state permission to add three outpatient operating rooms on the third floor of Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital. The nearly $4.8 million project would renovate and equip existing inpatient operating rooms that were previously used at Community Hospital. (The Roanoke Times)

Hollins University met a $5 million fundraising challenge from longtime benefactor Jane Batten, who offered to match the funds if the goal was reached by December 2013. The money will go toward scholarship aid and for students participating in the university’s Batten Leadership Institute. (The Roanoke Times)

Intrexon Corp., a synthetic biology company based in Blacksburg, tied for 10th on CNN/Money’s list of the largest venture capital deals of the second quarter. Intrexon received a Series E round of $100 million led by Third Security LLC of Radford and CEO Randal Kirk. (News release)

Long & Foster Realtors announced plans to close its Daleville office and consolidate operations at its Roanoke County facility, moving 49 employees in the process. Cost savings and the chance to better position its agents motivated the move. (The Roanoke Times)

RGC Resources Inc., a Roanoke-based energy products and services provider, announced a two-for-one stock split, giving shareholders of record on Aug. 15 a 100 percent stock dividend to take effect on Sept. 1. (The Roanoke Times)

The Roanoke-Blacksburg region was cited as an “emerging epicenter” for high technology industry in a study undertaken by Wired Magazine and the Cluster Mapping Project at Harvard Business School. (News release)

Virginia Tech created a Center for Public Health Practice and Research as a result of increased health-related research at the university and its new master’s public health program. Kathy Hosig, a professor of population health science, will direct the center. (The Roanoke Times)

Wells Fargo’s Roanoke County operation laid off 59 employees who worked with borrowers unable to make payments. The bank said customers are complying better with loan terms now and the “default operations” were no longer needed. Those employees may be hired for other jobs at the bank. (The Roanoke Times)
