The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region awarded $1.1 million in grants to 73 nonprofit groups in the Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County, N.C., area. The Danville Regional Foundation provided $750,000 of the funding. (Danville Register & Bee)

Donnachaidh Associates LLC, a Danville provider of agricultural products, will begin an operation to take biosolids from wastewater treatment plants and use them to establish a tree farm. Eventually, the tree farm harvest will be used in biofuel or lumber products. (Danville Register & Bee)

Henry County will receive $800,000 in federal funds for development of water and sewer infrastructure at an industrial park near the North Carolina line. The county spent $2.2 million in August 2007 to buy the 621-acre site south of Ridgeway and is in the process of buying an adjacent 120 acres. (Martinsville Bulletin)

LASCO Bathware Inc., an Anaheim, Calif., manufacturer of upscale bathware products, will invest $1.7 million to expand its Halifax County facility. The project will create 50 jobs and save an existing 280. (News release)

The Pittsylvania County Economic Development Office’s executive committee voted to recommend closure of the office to its board of directors. Their action comes after the county voted to end financial support for the group and establish its own economic development department under the supervision of the county administrator. The Virginia Tobacco Commission will set aside $100 million to seed research and implementation of renewable alternative fuels. The funds will be used for research and development of alternative energy projects, as well as provide matching funds for federal monies on future projects. (Danville Register & Bee)

Yorktowne Cabinetry laid off 70 of the 165 workers at its Ringgold plant, citing the continuing downturn in the home-building sector. (Danville Register & Bee)
