James Madison University received a three-year, $3.4 million grant from the Virginia Department of Health to produce an interactive Web site devoted to nutrition information for children and their families. University faculty will be involved with producing content on dietetics, pediatric nursing, social work and adult education. (News Leader)

Mohawk Industries will close its Waynesboro plant with the loss of 120 jobs. The company had previously laid off more than 100 workers this year, and more than 1,000 companywide in 2008. The move came as a result of decreased demand for carpet from the depressed housing market. (News Virginian)

NTELOS Holdings Corp., a provider of communications services, bought 2,200 miles of fiber optic network lines from Allegheny Energy Inc. The lines are located primarily in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. NTELOS is repositioning its wireline business from voice access to high-bandwidth data traffic. (Business Wire)

The Rockingham Group, a Harrisonburg insurance company, entered into an alliance with The Norfolk & Dedham Group of Dedham, Mass. The deal, while not a merger, will allow the companies to offer more services and spread risk over a diverse geographic base while maintaining company autonomy. (PRNewswire)

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a Frederick County producer of clinical diagnostic products, is investing $8.9 million to expand its Middletown facility and create 50 jobs. The move comes as the company adds a medical liquid formula line at the plant. (The Associated Press)

Western State Hospital in Staunton will receive land for a new facility after Staunton’s Industrial Development Authority agreed to a land purchase and transfer to make the project possible. The 66-acre site is in the Crossroads Business Park adjacent to the current hospital campus. The city will receive 275 acres for mixed-use development from the deal. Plans were announced last year to build a new $127 million hospital facility. (News Virginian)
