Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg exceeded its goal in a $12.5 million fundraising campaign. With the hospital’s new $300 million campus facility set to open in 2010, $13.8 million has been raised for general expenses. Officials hope to raise $15 million by the time the hospital opens. Shenandoah Telecommunications Co. of Edinburg completed its purchase of cable assets in Virginia and West Virginia from Rapid Communications LLC. The company plans to begin a two-year service upgrade project for its new customers, which will add offerings in high-definition TV, high-speed Internet and voice services. (News release)

Shenandoah University was ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its latest survey for health-care programs across the country. The university’s graduate-level physician assistant program was 23rd out of 73 schools, its highest ranking. Other areas that made the report were nurse-midwifery and occupational therapy, all graduate-level programs. (The Winchester Star)

Shockey Precast Group of Winchester, a provider of precast concrete construction services, laid off 32 employees, citing slowing economic conditions. (The Winchester Star)

Valley Health, a Winchester-based health-care company, bought War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., for $2.75 million. The deal gives Valley Health 551 hospital beds, 166 long-term and skilled-care beds among its holdings, and total employment of 4,700 people. (The Winchester Star)

The Wayside Inn of Middletown, operated continuously since 1797 in the longest such stretch for an inn in the United States, has cut its availability for rooms to only Friday and Saturday nights because of the recession. The restaurant will continue to operate Wednesday through Sunday. (The Winchester Star)
