Jefferson Lab, a Newport News research facility, received $75 million in economic stimulus money. About $10 million will be used to upgrade the laboratory. The remainder of the funds will move up the timetable on a $310 million upgrade to double the energy level of the lab’s electron beam accelerator. That project will create 50 permanent jobs at the lab and a number of civil construction jobs. (The Daily Press)

Muller Martini Manufacturing Corp., which is based in Switzerland, will lay off 79 workers, about one-third of the work force, at its Newport News facility, which makes book binding machinery and mailroom equipment. The company has operated in Newport News since 1973. (The Daily Press)

Raj Randeria, a partner in Aniesh Corp., put up for sale land that had been earmarked for a Hampton Inn & Suites hotel in downtown Norfolk. Plans for the 15-story, 146-room facility were approved by the city a year ago but work halted after the site was cleared. The property has been listed for $1.8 million. (The Virginian-Pilot)

The Virginian-Pilot newspaper announced its third major work-force reduction in the last six months, laying off 40 employees and dropping its employment below 1,000. Company spokesmen, however, noted the paper and its associated companies turned a profit in the first quarter, its first good performance in about a year. (The Virginian-Pilot)

The law school faculty of the College of William & Mary has approved the formation and publication of the school’s fifth law journal. The William & Mary Business Law Review will publish its first issues this fall. (News Release)
