Dominion Virginia Power is seeking permission from the State Corporation Commission to offer customers the choice of buying reusable energy.
The plan would provide two options. One would allow residents to offset 100 percent of their electrical power with electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind, or geothermal. Payments would be determined by the customers’ monthly use of electricity and current market prices for renewable energy.
Under a second plan, customers could designate a specific dollar amount to be added to their monthly bills for the purchase of renewable energy.
The voluntary plan, which would start in January 2009 if approved by the SCC, would allow customers to choose green energy but would not necessarily lower their electricity bills.
