DRS Technologies Inc. plans to consolidate its corporate operations in Arlington County, increasing its work force there to more than 100 employees.
The company, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Italy-based Finmeccanica S.p.A., will consolidate teams from Parsippany, N.J., and Bethesda, Md., at its current offices in Crystal City at 2345 Crystal Drive. Approximately 30 DRS employees already work in the building.
The decision to consolidate in Arlington allows the company to be closer to its prime customer — the government.
“Being primarily a defense contractor, Arlington — specifically the Crystal City area — is very close to our customers,” said Rich Goldberg, a spokesman for DRS. “It gives us the ability to increase our visibility and connectivity with our customer base, as well as all the decisionmakers in the region. Many of our partners are in the region as well.”
Relocation of employees will begin soon and is expected to be complete by the fourth quarter of this year, Goldberg said.
Gov. Bob McDonnell said he met with DRS officials at the 2010 Farnborough International Air Show in England. McDonnell approved a $1 million grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Arlington County with the project.
