Construction underway on $78 million expansion at Covenant Woods in Hanover County
- September 24, 2012
About 400 people gathered last week to celebrate the groundbreaking of a $78 million dollar expansion at Covenant Woods, a nonprofit continuing care community in Hanover County.
The expansion will double the community’s number of independent living residences, adding 84 apartments, 22 cottages and other amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, fitness center and day spa.
The centerpiece of the expansion is The Lodge, situated in a woodland near nature trails. It will offer a pub, restaurant, community center, covered parking and an outdoor terrace.
This is the second expansion undertaken by Covenant Woods since opening in Hanover in 2001. With the senior living market seeing double-digit growth over the next decade and the Baby Boomer generation turning 65, the board of Covenant Woods felt it was a good time to move forward on the project.
According to Beth Richardson, director of marketing, Covenant Woods has an occupancy rate of about 96 percent now, with its 29 cottages and 104 apartments. The expansion will boost the number of cottages to 51 and apartments to 188. Seventy-five percent of the new units have already sold, Richardson said.
The general contractor is W.M. Jordan Co. based in Newport News. The expansion is scheduled to take two years to complete with the 22 cottages expected to be ready by the end of 2013, and The Lodge and its amenities to be complete by the end of 2014.
Besides independent living, the 75-acre Covenant Woods campus also offers dementia care and nursing facilities.
