Work begins next month on a three-year, $100 million-plus project to build a new Sentara Leigh Hospital on the site of the current one on Kempsville Road in Norfolk.
Two five-story patient towers will eventually replace three, 1970s-era wings on the current 250-bed hospital. The earlier phases of the project expanded and modernized the emergency department and operating rooms.
The project’s designer is HDR Architects, and Whiting-Turner is serving as general contractor. The triangle-shaped towers will anchor the south end of the hospital campus on either side of a large garden space. The first structure that will be built is a staff parking deck on the property’s eastern edge. The groundbreaking for the first tower is scheduled in March 2012.
The project also includes a 48-bed orthopedic and rehabilitation center on the first floor that will employ part of the outside garden for walking exercises.
