comScore reports $29 billion in online holiday spending

The new mantra for holiday shopping might be “Let it snow.”
comScore, an Internet tracking firm based in Reston, released figures today on the November-December holiday shopping season that showed $29.1 billion in U.S. retail e-commerce spending, a 4 percent increase from the $28 million spent in 2008. 

The heaviest online spending day of 2009 and of all time came on Dec. 15, when people spent $913 million, 21 percent more than the $754 million spent on the same day in 2008. Cyber Monday, Nov. 30, ranked as the second biggest day of the season with $887 million. 

“Among the highlights of the season was the first $900 million online spending day and a strong late season spending surge, propelled by effective retailer promotions, guaranteed shipping and a major snowstorm on the Eastern seaboard that convinced many to shop from the comfort of home,” said comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni.

According to comScore, the top performing categories for online sales were jewelry and watches and electronics.
