Virginia tax commissioner dies unexpectedly
June 15, 2010 4:11 PM

Virginia Tax Commissioner Janie Bowen died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, according to state officials.

Bowen last week was elected president of the Federation of Tax Administrators, a national organization that provides training and research around the country and tracks federal legislation that would affect state tax revenues.

Bowen worked for the state since 1978, when she joined the Virginia Department of Taxation as a tax adviser. She later served as director of tax policy, assistant commissioner for customer service, and then as executive commissioner for policy and administration. She was deputy secretary of finance before former Gov. Tim Kaine appointed her tax commissioner in May 2005.
