An up year in a down economy |  2009 CFO Awards

A good chief financial officer is a valuable asset in a recession.  That kernel of wisdom can be gleaned from this year’s Virginia CFO Awards.

Virginia Business has presented awards to the state’s top CFOs every year since 2006.  No one would have been surprised if this year’s program attracted fewer than 50 nominations, roughly the number received during the past two years.

After all, Virginia companies are facing the toughest economy since the 1930s.  In fact, one major company that participated in the past, Circuit City Stores Inc., is no longer in business.

But Virginia companies appear eager to acknowledge the accomplishments of their CFOs in tough times. Virginia Business received 60 nominations this year. That number represents a 20 percent jump over 2008 and a 76 percent increase from 2006. Then more than 330 people crowded into The Jefferson Hotel ballroom on July 1 to give them a public pat on the back.

This year’s award winners comprise a diverse group. They are:

Large private companies:
Mark Baumgartner
Liberty Tax Service
Virginia Beach

Small private companies:
Andrea Kilmer
The ESG Companies
Virginia Beach

Large nonprofit organizations:
Dr. Maurice N. Scherrens
    George Mason University

Small nonprofit organizations:
Fernando Gutierrez
American Red Cross-Greater Richmond Chapter

Publicly traded companies:
Thomas N. Chewning
Dominion Resources Inc.
(who retired in June)

The selection process involved the magazine’s editorial staff reviewing all nominations and narrowing them down to no more than five finalists per category. The resulting 21 finalists were submitted to a panel of five judges, all of whom were last year’s award winners.

The judges were:
• Dave Bosher of in Richmond (small private company winner).
• Mark Danisewicz of American Systems in Chantilly (large private company winner).
• Victoria Harker of AES Corp. in Arlington (public company award winner)
• Karen Joyner of Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia in Norfolk (small nonprofit winner).
• Donald Lorton of Carilion Clinic in Roanoke (large nonprofit winner).

The judges reviewed the nominations independently and made their choices for first, second, third, etc., in each category. Their votes were weighted in reverse (with first place receiving five points and second place getting four). The points then were added up to select the winners.

Profiles of the winners appear on the following pages. The stories reveal their accomplishments outside the office as well as at work. Chewning, for example, received the “Humanitarian Award” from that National Conference for Community & Justice, and Gutierrez was awarded two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Medals and a Silver Star for his military service in Vietnam.

In addition to Virginia Business, the Virginia CFO Awards are sponsored by the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and Goodman & Co.
