Alpha Natural Resources to build new headquarters in Bristol
November 13, 2009 4:56 PM

Coal miner Alpha Natural Resources will build a $17.5 million headquarters in Bristol, creating 69 new jobs and retaining 131 jobs.

The company, which recently bought Foundation Coal, is currently headquartered in nearby Abingdon. Virginia competed with Tennessee and Maryland for the deal.

Alpha will spend $17.5 million on the new headquarters, which will be located in Bristol’s new Sugar Hollow Business Complex and ready for occupancy in mid-2011.

“The property is in a very attractive,  park-like setting and has easy interstate access,” CEO Kevin Crutchfield said in a statement. “A distinct advantage of the new location is its proximity to many of the company’s operations and its convenience for Alpha’s current corporate office work force.”

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine approved spending $1 million from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to help Bristol with the project and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $3.4 million for the project.
