History, mystery and more

Suffolk is a dynamic fusion of urban, suburban, village and waterfront lifestyles, preserving four centuries of history and Mr. Peanut®. The city has a vibrant downtown, prospering industries, and unparalleled southern hospitality. Stroll through historic structures that are today’s shops, restaurants and arts venues. Enjoy a musical, concert or theatrical performance at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. Shine new light on Suffolk’s history by lantern tour from Cedar Hill Cemetery to Riddick’s Folly House Museum (1837).

If the wild side is more your style, explore the mystery and lore of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Once estimated to be over a million acres, it served as a route to freedom for runaway slaves. Today the refuge is open to hiking, biking, photography, wildlife observation, fishing and boating. Narrated bus tours and guided canoe outings depart from the Suffolk Visitor Center.
Whether you visit for an afternoon, a week or a lifetime, you’ll see why it’s a good time to be in Suffolk.
