Alpha Natural Resources Inc., an Abingdon-based coal company, will undertake a $600 million repurchase of outstanding common stock through the end of December 2014. This is in addition to an existing buyback program of $135 million which began in May 2010. (PRNewswire)

FreightCar America, a Chicago-based manufacturer of rail cars, is adding a second production line at its Roanoke shop to fill orders for Norfolk Southern Corp. The expansion will create 200 jobs, bringing the work force to 425 by late fall. (The Roanoke Times)

Steel Fab, a Washington County manufacturer of carbon steel and stainless steel pressure vessels, will invest $900,000 to expand its operations to meet growth in orders. The investment will create 11 jobs. (Bristol Herald Courier)

Steel Dynamics, a Roanoke steel plant, will pay a $5,500 fine for violations of state environmental regulations at its Roanoke Bar Division. The violations did not involve release of pollutants but errors in record keeping. (The Roanoke Times)

Tread Corp., a Roanoke manufacturer of bulk handling equipment for the explosives industry, will invest $5 million in an expansion of its Botetourt County facility. The project will create 100 jobs. Virginia competed against South Carolina for the investment. (News release)

Utility Trailer, a manufacturer of trailers for hauling freight, will hire 200 workers to help meet rising demand for its trailers. The company’s Glade Spring plant was heavily damaged by a tornado in April but is operating at full capacity now. (Bristol Herald Courier)

Virginia Tech ranked eighth in a list of the top 100 universities for hospitality and tourism research in a study published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research. (The Roanoke Times)
