Averett University  was ranked in the top 20 percent of colleges nationwide for its assistance to military veterans in a study by G.I. Jobs magazine. The rankings took into account scholarships, discounts and assistance programs for students with military service. (Danville Register & Bee)

The Industrial Development Authority of Danville entered into contracts to buy two downtown properties. It is also applying for as much as $600,000 in grant funds to redevelop one of them, a warehouse site, for an undisclosed economic development project. (Danville Register & Bee)

Microsoft will invest $150 million in an expansion of its Mecklenburg County data center with the addition of another facility and 21 megawatts of electric power. The additional investment will create 10 jobs. (News release)

The Southern Virginia Regional Alliance was launched by the cities of Danville, Martinsville and the counties of Pittsylvania, Halifax, Henry, and Patrick to help market the region. The alliance will compile regional data and provide branding, a website and other marketing efforts. Once potential businesses have been attracted to the area it will be up to local economic developers to finalize deals. (Danville Register & Bee)

During the annual Virginia Municipal League conference in early October, city and county leaders discussed the concerns and opportunities of the Coles Hill project, where Virginia Uranium Inc. would like to mine and mill what’s thought to be the largest untapped U.S. uranium deposit at an estimated 119 million pounds. “Whether or not Coles Hill will ever be mined, I don’t know,” said state Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan, who serves on the uranium legislative subcommittee. Yet, part of knowing whether it can be done depends on the regulatory process, which would require more studies, he said. Watkins argued that in order to do this, the moratorium would have to be lifted. (Danville Register & Bee)
