Chesapeake selected MBP, a Fairfax engineering firm, to perform engineering inspection services for the Dominion Boulevard project. The $300 million effort will involve road-widening and bridge work on U.S. Route 17 connecting Interstate 64/464 to Northeastern North Carolina. Construction will begin in January 2013 and take about four years to complete. (News release)

Children’s Harbor, a nonprofit which operates early childhood programs in South Hampton Roads, received a $1 million endowment from the Batten Endowment Challenge. The Batten endowment fund was created by Jane Batten of Virginia Beach and her late husband, Frank Batten Sr., former chairman of Landmark Communications. The Hampton Roads Community Foundation will administer the fund for Children’s Harbor.

Global wind company Gamesa announced in May that it will build the wind turbine prototype in Spain’s Canary Islands instead of on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. In a press release, the company cited a slow-developing U.S. market for wind power, as part of the reason behind its change of plans. (News release)

Huntington Ingalls’ Newport News Shipbuilding gave $500,000 to the Newport News police department to cover funding not provided by the city. The Newport News Police Foundation is in the midst of a $5 million fundraising effort over the next five years. (Daily Press)

On Call Telecom, a Virginia Beach-based provider of communications solutions, received the Partner of the Year award from SimpleSignal Inc., a provider of cloud-based unified communications. On Call Telecom and SimpleSignal have worked together for two years. (News release)

Smithfield Foods Inc., a food processor based in Smithfield, is undertaking an $85 million expansion of its Kinston, N.C., plant where hot dog and lunchmeat production was transferred from a Portsmouth facility. MEB General Contractors of Chesapeake was picked as the project’s contractor, and Clark Nexsen of Norfolk for engineering and design work. (Inside Business)

Tidewater Global Services, a Chesapeake-based supply chain solutions company, was launched as a holding company including Tidewater Packaging Services, TPS Cargo and TPS Medical. The new entity reflects a broad range of logistics and consulting services. The company began in 2004 as Tidewater Packaging Services. (PRNewswire)

TRG Customer Solutions, a Jacksonville, Fla., provider of call center services, announced it was laying off 371 employees at its Hampton facility. The company said it was not closing the center and had hopes of securing new contracts. (Daily Press)

The Williamsburg Pottery, a landmark retail operation along U.S. 60, reopened after a 17-month, $30 million reconstruction, which is intended to resemble an Old World marketplace. The company expects to have more than 1 million visitors this year to the four-building, 160,000-square-foot facility. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
