Genworth Financial Inc., an Henrico County-based insurance company, has completed the sale of its Medicare supplement business to Aetna Inc. for $276 million. The company expects to record an after-tax gain of approximately $35 million from the sale, which was final on Oct. 1. The deal included the sale of Continental Life Insurance Co. of Brentwood, Tenn., and its subsidiary, American Continental Insurance Co. (VirginiaBusiness.com)

Richmond philanthropists William H. Goodwin Jr. and Alice T. Goodwin donated $30 million to Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore for a research center focused on gene-based cancer treatments. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Lynchburg has been awarded a $700,000 federal grant it hopes will help it reel in a second airline. The city’s grant, one of only 29 given out nationwide, was specifically awarded to help it court AirTran Airways, a low-cost carrier. (The News & Advance)

Richmond was named host of the 2015 UCI World Cycling Championships. The nine-day event is expected to bring 450,000 people from 70 countries to the region, with an estimated $135.3 million economic benefit. New York billionaire real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trump promised to “do something spectacular” with the 900-acre former Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard in Albemarle County. Trump’s 28-year-old son, Eric, will run the winery with the assistance of former owners Patricia Kluge and her husband, Bill Moses. Plans include constructing new buildings at the vineyard, expanding its product line and eventually getting more acres under vine. (VirginiaBusiness.com)

Windsor/Aughtry Co., a Greenville, S.C., developer, cancelled plans for a hotel project in Richmond’s Jackson Ward district. The firm planned to buy a 5.6-acre site near the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park, off Interstate 95 but eventually decided the city’s lodging market was not recovering fast enough to provide a suitable investment opportunity.
