Alpha Natural Resources Inc. has appointed Paul Vining to the newly created position of chief commercial officer.
Alpha, based in Abingdon, is a supplier and exporter of coal. Vining has 30 years of executive experience within the coal industry, and will be responsible for the company’s domestic and international market development, sales, transportation, logistics and product optimization. He will also oversee an expansion of Alpha’s presence in international seaborne coal markets.
Before joining the company, Vining was president and chief operating officer of Patriot Coal Corp. in St. Louis. Prior to that, he was COO of Magnum Coal Co. and Trout Holdings, two privately held Central Appalachian coal producers. He has held the top executive sales and trading positions for both Arch Coal and Peabody Energy, the two largest coal producers in the United States.
Vining will join Alpha in early May, and report to CEO Kevin Crutchfield.
