Airports provide flight accessibility from Hampton Roads’ two regions
Virginia Business
May 2007
Hampton Roads’ two major airports offer nonstop flights to 25 cities from the region’s two main areas. Norfolk International Airport is in the more densely populated South Hampton Roads, and the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport offers flights from the Peninsula.
Together these airports handled more than 68.8 million pounds of air cargo and flew almost 4.8 million passengers in 2006. The region benefits from a large number of freight forwarders and custom brokers who are available to help transport cargo.
Norfolk International has two air cargo terminals that cover 88,000 square feet. The airport’s modern cargo equipment can handle large and small shipments, with flexible design and an aircraft ramp to provide direct access from the plane to the warehouse.
Both airports have undergone renovations. Newport News is building a $10 million, 727-space parking garage. Its new air traffic control tower will open in summer 2007. It also recently added new general aviation hangars and extended its ramps and runways.

Norfolk International Airport is finishing renovations to its U.S. Customs facility so that it can handle larger aircraft. The airport is adding new restrooms and an enclosure for aircraft maintenance, which are scheduled to be completed in spring 2007.
Both airports are also increasing their retail appeal. Norfolk International recently underwent renovations and replacements of its food concessions. Phillips Seafood Restaurant and Unos Pizzeria will join six other newly open concession stands. Hudson News opened in Newport News/Williamsburg in 2006.
