Bristol Virginia Utilities
, a municipal provider of utility services, including broadband access, was named winner of the Cornerstone Award for outstanding customer service by Broadband Properties Magazine. The awards, given in six areas including marketing, strategy and technology, honor notable achievements in deployment of fiber-optic networks to residential customers. (NR)

CMSS Architects of Virginia Beach received the Outstanding Private Sector Plan Award from the Virginia Chapter of the America Planning Association for its master plan for the Village of Rocketts Landing in Richmond. The plan was cited for new zoning categories and procedures for phased brownfield remediation. (NR)

Anthony “Tony” Jimenez, president and CEO of MicroTech, a Vienna-based IT and network services company, was selected as one of the 25 Powerful Minority Men in Business by the Minority Enterprise Executive Council. He has also been noted as a “Fed 100,” one of the most influential executives in the government information systems community. (PRN)

Lane Kneedler, a partner at the Richmond law firm Reed Smith LLP, was elected to a second two-year term as secretary of the Uniform Law Commission, a group of 350 attorneys, judges and legal professionals from across the country which drafts and promotes adoption of uniform statues. He was previously a law professor at the University of Virginia and a chief deputy to the attorney general of Virginia. (NR)

John W. Snow, chairman of Cerberus Capital Management LP, was named Newman Visiting Fellow at The Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. He will work with the Governing America in a Global Era program. Snow was U.S. Treasury Secretary under President George W. Bush and previously chairman and CEO of CSX Corp. (NR)

Del. Terrie L. Suit was named chairperson of the board for LEAD Hampton Roads, a leadership initiative program of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. Suit is a member of the House of Delegates and serves on the interstate commerce committee for the National Conference of State Legislators, as well as the South Hampton Roads BRAC Working Group. Everette G. “Buddy” Allen Jr.
, a partner in the Richmond law firm LeClair Ryan, and his wife, Ann, donated $2.6 million to Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. A 1962 graduate of RMC, Allen and his wife have contributed between $3.5 and $4 million to the college over the years. Part of the gift will be used to establish a scholarship fund in their name. Yvonne Allmond, a senior vice president in private banking for TowneBank, was named president of the Norfolk State University Foundation Board, the first woman to hold the position. Among a number of civic ventures, Gov. Mark Warner named Allmond a commissioner for the Virginia Housing Development Authority in 2005. (News release)

The Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives named Jack Hornbeck, president and CEO of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, as its 2007 Chamber Executive of the Year. (News release)

The National Governors Association will honor Frank Batten Sr., former executive of Landmark Communications Inc. and retired publisher of The Virginian-Pilot and The Roanoke Times, for his contributions to public service, in particular for the $400 million he has donated to education over the years, including, most recently, $100 million to the University of Virginia. Bernard H. Clineburg, chairman and CEO of Cardinal Financial Corp., Tysons Corner, was named chairman of the Virginia Bankers Association, succeeding James. C. Cherry of Wachovia Bank. (Business Wire)

Robert W. Hershberger, executive vice president of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance, was installed as president of the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. He is the first person to serve as president twice, having previously led the association in 1990-91. The VACCE named him executive of the year in 1993. (News Release)

Naren Ramakrishnan, associate professor of computer science at Virginia Tech, was named one of “40 Innovative IT People To Watch Under The Age Of 40” by Computerworld magazine. Ramakrishnan focuses on the fields of data mining and personalization and is noted for his work on the concept of “storytelling” which explores connections between data sets that appear, on the surface, to be dissimilar. AES Corp., an Arlington-based power company, received the electric power industry’s highest award for its Latin American operations. The Edison Electric Institute gave AES the Edison Award for demonstrated improvements in generation and distribution of electric power in Latin America. (News release)

Susan R. Blackman, a partner in the Virginia Beach law firm Willcox & Savage, was named by the Society for Human Resource Management to serve on its Global Expertise Panel, which consists of 15 human resources experts who offer policy advice on international HR practices. (News release)

Maria Herring, government sales manager for the Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau, was awarded the Sam Gilmer Supplier of the Year Award by the Society of Government Meeting Professionals, the highest honor offered by the group, a professional organization for people involved in government meeting planning. Robert Hershberger, executive vice president of The Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance, was honored by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives for his long service with a commendation marking his induction into the “25 Year Club.”

Steven L. Higgs received the Local Bar Leader of the Year award from the Virginia State Bar’s Conference of Local Bar Associations. Higgs is past president of the Roanoke Bar Association and is chair of the Roanoke Bar Association Foundation. (News release)

The Virginia Commonwealth University Adcenter received a $1 million gift from The Interpublic Group, a New York agency holding company. The donation will help finance the Adcenter’s new home, to open in December, and establish an endowment for the center. (Business Wire)

Washington and Lee University received a $100 million gift from an undisclosed donor, the largest gift in the school’s history and one of the largest ever for a liberal arts college. The donation will be used to establish a scholarship program, fund two professorships and establish lecture and leadership programs. (PR Newswire)
