Tuition and fees at Virginia’s 23 community colleges will increase 6 percent for the 2007-08 school year. The typical student will pay $2,404. The April
issue of Virginia Business looked at the growing number of students who are using community colleges as “on-ramps” to the commonwealth’s four-year universities.
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island had its second successful rocket launch in late April. The Air Force Minotaur I rocket carried a satellite designed to help the Pentagon develop a missile defense system. A story in the Around the Old Dominion section of the February
issue looked at the future of the spaceport after its first launch in December.
A federal agency says that tobacco companies spent less on advertising and marketing in 2005 and 2004 after reaching a record high in 2003. The Federal Trade Commission reported in April that spending by the five largest tobacco companies, including Henrico County-based Philip Morris USA dropped to $13.1 billion in 2005 from $15.15 billion two years earlier. The April
issue looked at changes at Philip Morris in the past 10 years and its support for Food and Drug Administration regulation of tobacco products.
