AOL, a Dulles-based Internet services provider, laid off 450 employees in Northern Virginia as part of previously announced cutbacks. The layoffs were fewer than originally envisioned. Instead of losing 1,000 positions in Northern Virginia, the company has laid off fewer than 600. (The Washington Post)

Dominion Resources, a Richmond energy producer, indefinitely delayed installation of pollution-scrubbing controls at its coal-fired power plant in Chesapeake, opting instead to import more foreign, low-sulfur coal. The company says the cleaner-burning coal should still allow it to reach its 2012 emission goals. (Daily Press)

Saxon Capital Inc., a Glen Allen-based subsidiary of Morgan Stanley Mortgage Capital Inc., laid off 75 to  100 employees after its merger with Morgan Stanley. Saxon is a residential mortgage lending and servicing real estate investment trust. ( Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Shenandoah Telecommunications Co. of Edinburg, as part of a streamlining effort, will cut 50 positions through a combination of means, including an early retirement offer, attrition and layoffs. As part of its restructuring, the company is freezing its defined benefit pension plan and enhancing its 401(k) plan. (PRNewswire)

Stanley Furniture Co. Inc., a furniture manufacturer headquartered in Stanleytown, will reduce the work force at its Robbinsville, N.C., plant by about 200 workers, including management and hourly employees. (PRNewswire)
