The Center for Innovative Technology's GAP Fund was named by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the Top 100 Venture Capital Firms in the nation. The GAP Fund was sixth highest on the list, which was based on the number of early-stage deals in 2005, and was the most active early stage investor in Virginia. (News release)

Women Impacting Public Policy, a national bipartisan women's business group, honored three Virginia businesswomen for the rapid growth of their firms during the last five years. Three of the five recipients of the Fast 5 Award were from Virginia. Named were Catherine Giordano, president and CEO of Knowledge Information Systems in Virginia Beach; Norma Byron, president and founder of Ashlawn Group in Alexandria; and Lani Hay, president and CEO of Lanmark Technology Inc. in Fairfax. John Hewitt, CEO and founder of Liberty Tax Service in Virginia Beach, has been named to Accounting Today's Top 100 most influential persons in the tax industry. This the sixth consecutive year Hewitt has been named to the list. (News release)

McGuireWoods, a Richmond-based law firm, tied for third place among the country's top 14 law firms for litigation practice in a survey of general counsels of Fortune 250 companies, conducted by General Counsel magazine. (News release)

Edward W. Pence Jr., senior vice president at the Virginia Beach engineering firm Stroud, Pence & Associates, has been elected chairman for the Council of American Structural Engineers. Pence earned engineering degrees from Virginia Teach and Old Dominion University. (News release)

The International Economic Development Council honored Virginia's Gateway Region for having the Outstanding General Purpose Web Site for organizations servicing populations of more than 200,000. The group's newly redesigned site, www.gatewayregion.com, was cited as a centralized, state-of-the-art resource. (News release)
