Zapata
Corp. of Rochester, N.Y., wants
to sell its 58 percent interest in Omega
Protein Corp.,
a Houston-based company that owns a menhaden processing
plant in Reedsville. The plant has become a major Northern
Neck employer. The revitalized menhaden processing industry
was profiled in the magazine’s November
2004 issue.
New York-based Verizon
Communications has completed its acquisition of Asburn-based MCI
Inc. MCI once was part of Mississippi-based
WorldCom, whose former CEO Bernard Ebbers, has been
sentenced to 25
years in prison for his part in a massive accounting
scandal. The Verizon-MCI merger was reported in the
magazine’s March
2005 issue.
Richmond Mayor L.
Douglas Wilder has proposed a five-year plan that he expects to finance
with a $250 million
line of credit. The plan calls for creating citywide
math and arts high schools, expanding the Carpenter
Center for the Performing Arts and creating a downtown
law school. The magazine previewed Wilder’s plans
for the city in its April
2005 issue.
