Gerry Connolly, chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, was awarded the Local Distinguished Service Award by the American Public Transportation Assoc. Connolly has been an advocate for dedicated funding in transit projects and supported expansion of the Metrorail line through the Dulles Corridor. He is also chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. (News release)

The Asian American Business Roundtable named Filnet Inc., an Alexandria-based information technology company, Entrepreneur of the Year. The company was judged on revenue growth in 2005 and 2006 and projections for future growth. (News release)

Elizabeth J. Moran of the Virginia Department of Business Assistance, received the Cardinal Award from the Virginia Economic Developers Assoc. Moran has been involved with economic development for 27 years, and was president of VEDA in 2003-04. (News release)

R&D Magazine cited work by researchers at NASA’s Langley Research Center among the top 100 innovations of the year. The Magnetic Field Response Measurement Acquisition System allows sensors to act in a truly wireless capacity without connection to a power source. The applications in aviation alone would lead to significant upgrades in safety and efficiency in maintenance. The system is expected to have a far wider use outside the aviation and space industries. (News release)

Old Dominion Electric Corp. of Glen Allen was named to the NCB Co-Op 100, the top cooperative business ventures in the country, ranked by revenue. ODEC ranked 57th in the survey with revenues of $738 million, up from #63 in 2004. ODEC was also named second runner-up of the 2006 United Telecom Council Apex Award for its work in creating broadband infrastructure in rural Virginia for business expansion and economic development. Smithfield Foods Inc., a Smithfield-based meat producer, received the American Meat Institute’s Environment Achievement and Environmental Recognition awards, as well as the Virginia Governor’s Environmental Excellence awards.
