The Department of Labor sued Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. over allegations of hiring discrimination against women at its Danville plant. A compliance review in May 1999 uncovered violations of federal compliance programs. Suit was brought after unsuccessful efforts to reach an out-of-court settlement. (Danville Register & Bee)

Tercica Inc., a Brisbane, Calif. pharmaceutical company, filed suit in Richmond federal court against Insmed Inc., accusing the Henrico company of false and misleading statements related to Tercica's drug, Increlex. Insmed produces a competing drug, iPlex, for the treatment of a rare disorder that causes short stature in children, and has said the active ingredient in Increlex is less safe than iPlex. A similar suit brought by Tercica in California was recently dismissed. In the new suit, Tercica alleges Insmed has presented incorrect information about Increlex to physicians. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

LandAmerica Financial Group Inc., a Richmond-based provider of real estate transaction services, reached agreement with Nevada to resolve reinsurance practices. The company will work with the state to create a consumer-education program on title insurance options, and pay a $560,280 fine. The practice in question involved formation of an insurance company with a builder, lender or real estates agent to share insurance risk. Many regulators viewed the practice as a kickback.
