American National Bankshares Inc., a Danville-based
financial institution, opened a loan production office
in Lynchburg as part of an expansion into that market.
Plans call for hiring additional staff and a application
for a branch office in the near future. American National
operates 13 offices in Virginia and North Carolina. (PRNewswire)
Norfolk Southern Corp.,
a Norfolk railroad, will purchase 50 locomotives
to meet an increase in
rail traffic. The purchase is in addition to plans
for 52 locomotives mentioned in the company's 2005
capital spending budget. The new additions will give
Norfolk Southern almost 4,000 locomotives. (Daily

Howard Miller Clock Co. of Zeeland, Mich.,
will expand production at Ridgeway Furniture Co. in
Henry County and add 25 jobs. The company will close
a curio cabinet plant in Mobile, Ala. And transfer
that work to Virginia; as well invest $5 million in
the new production line and $1 million for a warehouse.
Ridgeway Furniture has focused on production of grandfather
