Congress has approved a deal that
will require the Navy to postpone retirement of the
aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy until early next
year. The deal was included in an $82 billion measure
to fund the Iraq war. May’s
issue discussed the ripple effect that retirement
of the carrier could have on the Hampton Roads economy.
In May, Mayor L. Douglas Wilder and
Richmond City Council compromised on a two-year budget
that increased spending for police and schools. The
budget eliminates $800,000 worth of city positions
and
trims $2.7 million from economic development deals.
Wilder’s plans for the city were outlined in
April’s issue.
