LifePoint Hospitals Inc. of Brentwood, Tenn.
acquired Danville Regional Medical Center for
$210 million, of which $200 million will be used to
create a community foundation to assist educational,
charity and economic development efforts in the Danville
area. LifePoint owns Memorial Hospital of Martinsville
and Henry County, and is buying a hospital in Wytheville. (Danville

MCI Inc., an Ashburn-based
telecommunications company, accepted a $8.5 billion
buyout from Verizon
Communications Inc. Over the last several months MCI
rejected three larger offers from Qwest Communications
Inc. which eventually abandoned its pursuit of MCI. (The

United Parcel Service Inc., an Atlanta package-delivery
company, bought Overnite Corp., a Richmond-based
freight firm, for $1.25 billion. The deal culminates
UPS's search for a trucking company to help it compete
against FedEx Corp. for heavier transportation loads.
Overnite will operate as a subsidiary of UPS. (Richmond

America West Holdings Corp.,

of investment partners bought
Arlington's US Airways for $1.5 billion. The deal gives
America West entrée to eastern air markets and saves
beleaguered US Airways from possible failure despite
