Virginia Business
July 2005

William Goodwin and his wife Alice donated $32.5 million in a matching fund gift to the Virginia Commonwealth Univer-sity School of Engineering in late May. The Goodwins have donated almost $75 million to VCU in the past 15 years. The Goodwins were among the families profiled in June’s issue about the state’s richest and most influential families.

Billionaire Sheila Johnson has added sports to her business empire. The co-founder of Black Entertainment Television be-came part owner of the Washington Mystics women’s basketball team after buying a stake in Lincoln Holdings LLC. Lincoln Holdings also owns the NHL’s Washington Capitals and a stake in the NBA’s Washington Wizards. The move reportedly makes Johnson the first African-American woman to become an owner-partner in three pro sports franchises. Johnson was the subject of our June story cover.
