December 2005 Piedmont Virginia Community College has received a $1.2
million gift from the Kluge-Moses Founda-tion to support
the college’s science and health programs.
The college’s board voted to name a new building
the Kluge-Moses Science Building in recognition of the
gift. The new facility is part of a 2002 general
obligation bond package. It is expected to be bid next year and ready for classes
in 2008.
The foundation’s gift is the largest in the history of the college. It
ensures that the college’s Campaign for Opportunity and Excellence will
exceed its $10 million goal, bringing the campaign total to date to $11.2 million.
“The Kluge-Moses Science Building will support a wide range of study,” says
PVCC Pres-ident Frank Friedman. “In addition to current and future health-care
programs, the building will provide lab space for biology, chemistry, microbiology,
and anatomy and physiology courses. These science courses are the foundation
for many of our transfer programs and work force initiatives, such as viticulture
and enology.”
The building will have 34,000 square feet of space. Its estimated cost is $9.8
million. The general obligation bond package will cover $5 million of the cost,
with the remainder coming from the Kluge-Moses gift and additional state and
local sources. The project is currently in the design phase. A site has been
selected, and the preliminary design has been approved.
