University of Virginia researchers developed a steel-like alloy, DARVA-Glass 101, which is three times stronger than high-strength steel. The material is nonmagnetic and has non-corrosive properties. Possible applications include ship hulls, automobiles and corrosion-resistant coatings. Roanoke County received honors as one of the most technologically advanced counties in the country in a survey by the National Association of Counties and California's Center for Digital Government. The county was cited for its variety of online services, and though it has a population of 86,000, Roanoke County was judged in the population category between 150,000 and 249,999 because of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area's population of 235,000.
